The Melbourne FCA 2009 - Year of the Ox - Chinese New Year Festival features traditional and contemporary Chinese cultural activities.
2008's festival offered dances, Chinese Opera and singing, karaoke competition, numerous stalls of culinary delights, arts and crafts, Chinese chess competitions, lion dances, dragon parades, calligraphy and children's events.
With the official date of Chinese New Year falling on January 26 in 2009 (also Australia Day) festival programs of the 2009 Festival will be announced closer toward the date.
In line with Chinese tradition, there will be numerous displays of lions dances punctuated by beating drums and fire-crackers. During the day, the stages will showcase many cultural performances by Melbourne's great multicultural local communities and visiting Performance Arts Group from China.
The attractions are for young and old. In recent years the festival has been one of Melbourne's most celebrated festivals and is great for the whole family.
On the Western calendar, the start of the New Year falls on January 26, 2009 — The Year of the Ox.
